Gage-ing Success

By Webster’s definition the word “success” means “the favorable outcome of something attempted”. For the Gage Family it is many successful “outcomes” spanning three generations. You see, for Roger, Kevin and Kelsee Gage its all about a winning tradition.

The story begins with Roger Gage who; after earning a degree in engineering went to work for Arctic Cat snowmobiles in the early 70s in their Research and Development Department in Minnesota. He was instrumental in the design and development of one of the iconic race “sleds” of the era known as the Arctic Cat Twin Track 440X. Roger recently helped restore to one of the original Arctic Cat Twin Track 440X’s. That restoration displayed at a snowmobile roundup earned 1st place trophy, a further testament to Roger’s skills and talents.

Fast forward some 30 years, after working for several companies, Roger and his wife Jane eventually landed in Washington State. Roger got a job at Boeing where he still works today. He turned his considerable design, and fabrication skills to the sport of Drag Racing, building a very cool big block Chevrolet powered 10 second black 38 Chevrolet Business coupe for local competition at what is now Pacific Raceways.

NOTE: As of this writing Roger is tied for 10th place in Pro Bracket Points after two events in the Auto Max USA Bracket Series at Pacific Raceways.

One of Roger’s two sons, Kevin followed in his father’s footsteps. He got his introduction to drag racing at 16 when he and his brother would go to the races with their dad. Like his father, Kevin also works in the aerospace industry as a production supervisor. He also has his own race car. A 1966 Rambler American racing in Pro Bracket with power coming from a Dart equipped Chevy 383 built by Dale Green at DG Machine. Power passes thru a TH400 transmission to a Ford 9” with 4:11 gears. He raced this car until last season. He will be retiring the Rambler to build a 69 Nova for the 2012 season. With upgrades to the former Rambler’s power train Kevin is looking to move to Super Pro in the new season.

That brings us to the third generation “driver” Kelsee Gage, Kevin’s daughter. Kelsee is a 7th grader; who participates in volleyball, basketball and track while maintaining a 3.00 GPA. Her good grades keep her in the seat of a RPC built Gunslinger Jr. Dragster, and at the drag strip with Dad and Grandpa, “we like to hang out” she says. With help from her family and a few sponsors her goal is to be the first in the “family” to earn the coveted “NHRA Wally” for winning an event. Her other interests include music; in particular Justin Bieber: she is a teenage girl after all…Her mother even helped Kelsee dress up as Justin for Halloween.

NOTE: As of this writing Kelsee is 2nd in Junior Thunder Points following a runner up finish at the first event for Junior Dragster competition in the Auto Max USA Bracket Series at Pacific Raceways.

It is not uncommon on any racing weekend to see all three generations of the Gage family in the late rounds of competition in three different classes….

So I guess it is true “a family that races together stays together”.

NEWS, News, A LOT OF NEWS!

A near record car count and a rare Sunday race day for race #2 of the Auto Max USA Bracket Series proved to be a lot of fun for all in attendance.

Speaking of news: the gang at Big Food served a new menu “item” at the event – TWO FOOT HOT DOGS!! Seriously! How do you top that?

Race winners included Katie Kapler in Jr. Thunder; Jordan Calhoun in Jr. Lightning; racing legend Don “The Worm” Elgin was the Sportsman champ, while Dan Funderburg, won Motorcycle; Ken Reaves emerged victorious in Pro. Super Pro came down to a coin flip due to the rapidly approaching “county imposed” cerfew.  Brandon Spitali won the “flip” and the points to go with it over Mark Cavar.

The only thing that marred an otherwise super weekend was the untimely accident that saw Chris Cannon Sr. crash his daughter Nikki’s beautiful Corvette Roadster, the good news is Chris Sr. is OK…which is the best news of all.

LATE BREAKING NEWS!

In other “late breaking news” Ed Garfield, (former Track Manager/Announcer at Champion Raceway in Medford, OR.) has been appointed Drag Strip Manager. John Ramsey will concentrate on his duties in regards to the “marketing” of the facility.

The Auto Max USA Drag Race Series takes a month off.  Race #3 is Saturday Night under the lights, May 19.  Gates will open at 4 p.m.

Holeshot Baby! – Bremerton Raceway Easter Results

Holeshot Baby!

Of all the ways to win a typical drag race, most drivers would tell you that winning by a “reaction time advantage” or holeshot is the sweetest.

Out of the ten catagories contested at this years Easter Bunny Nationals at Bremerton Raceway including the two “second chance” races for the Junior Dragster classes, 7 of 10 were won by “holeshot”.

So for Super Pro Winner Joshua Sears from Pt. Orchard a .021 reaction advantage while driving his 75 Monza it meant a win.

In Pro it was Port Orchard’s Robert Steffen who parlayed an .017 reaction time into another winners circle appearance….The defending track champ just keeps it rollin’

In Motorcycle it was Bremerton Raceways defending champ “Mighty Joe” Lind who completed a unreal weekend which started with a wild crash on his race bike at Pacific Raceways, eventually winning the motorcycle class in Seattle on his street bike by beating defending track champ Jake Havens in the final. Fast forward to Bremerton Raceway on Sunday; where “Mighty Joe” does it again this time by a .069 holeshot in defeat of Shelton, Washington’s Stacy Hesch.

In the Junior Drag Racing portion of the program 8-9 Year Old Junior Dragster winner Samantha Hawes, Junior Thunder winner Katie Kapler, Junior Lighting winner Jordan Calhoun, Second Chance Jr. Lighting winner Jordin Howell and Second Chance Jr. Thunder winner Emily Lewis all joined the Easter Bunny in a zany winners circle on Easter Sunday…By the way with the exception of Samantha Hawes the 8-9 year old class winner who singled in the final, all the Junior program winners won by virtue of a “holeshot” are you see a pattern develop?

Sportsman Winner Gary Gandee Jr. soloed in the final due to mechanical issues for Bill Cadle’s Polara…And finally Steven Gossette began his title defense in the High School category in fine fashion by defeating Hayler Larson who red lit against the “champ”.

All in all a fun way to spend Easter Sunday….

Over 700 images are now available, including winners circle pictures.  Click here to go the photo gallery.

Auto Max USA Season Opener At Pacific Raceways – April 7th, 2012

The Auto Max USA Opener was nothing but “excitement” from start to finish.

Everyone was anticipating a great turnout at Pacific Raceways for the Auto Max USA Bracket Series Opener. The weather “gods” blessed us with sunny skies for an Easter weekend “present”.

An outstanding car count and close racing was expected as racers from throughout the Puget Sound converged on Pacific Raceways.

But along with things expected come things that can; and will surprise you…

During qualifying multi time track Motorcycle Champion “Mighty Joe” Lind experienced mechanical issues and damaged his regular race bike in spectacular fashion.

But like the saying goes all good athletes “must get back on the horse”. So, Joe jumped on his trusty street bike and piloted it to another series opener win in beating defending track champ Jacob Havens in the final.

In Super Pro, Kevin Heffington’s ’09 Mullis dragster got the best of Toby Petersen’s orange 1978 Malibu.

In Pro Bracket’s final round Brad Craig in his 67 Camaro beat the wheelstanding  Monza of Everett’s Martin Lambert.

In Sportsman, Jackie Soulek took the win in her 95 Camaro over the Mustang of Lake Tapps’ Keith Hadley due to an untimely “red light”.

Pictures from the event are now available for purchase in the photo gallery.  Race #2 in the Auto Max USA Drag Race Series is scheduled for next Sunday, April 15.

New…New…New!!

New…New…New!!

Lots of new and exciting changes are in store for the 2012 Season Opener at Pacific Raceways….Did I say new? How bout a new series sponsor!

For racers and fans familiar with the Lucas Drag Racing Series, the name Frank Tamez should be a familiar one. The standout Top Sportsman, Pro Mod and Pro Street driver can be described as a winner on all counts, having won numerous honors in the Lucas Oil Series and the Pacific Street Car Association.

He is a winner in the business world too, with his company Auto Max USA earning the prestigious “#1 volume independent used car dealership in the Pacific Northwest “ award a couple of years ago from his original location in Frank’s words “tiny Yakima”.

Most importantly for those of us in the Seattle area, Frank and his son Kurtis recently decided to expand their business, opening a new location in Kent; at the old Brett Chevrolet dealership location which is now the home of Kent Performance Auto Center and Auto Max USA. Along with the new business came the decision to form a “marketing partnership” with Pacific Raceways as the new sponsor of the 2012 Auto Max USA Bracket Series!

Plans include Kurtis as a regular competitor in the series, driving a “are you ready for this…” A VAN! Fully “wrapped in the Auto Max USA colors! Special offers and promotions are also planned for the new year! (For more information about Auto Max USA: http://www.latemodelcars.com

Last years series champions, Al Chinn in Super Pro, Bill Windley in Pro, Paul Young in Sportsman, Jake Havens in Motorcycle and Brandon Glatt in High School will join Junior Thunder class winner Lane Carver as they try to defend last seasons titles. Amanda Hitchcock last season’s Junior Lightning champion will be making the move to “full size” competition in 2012!

More new changes include a new concessionaire; ya gotta love the name- “Big Food” will be serving up a new menu for the new season! For more information on Big Food: http://www.bigfoodmobile.com.

A new “drag strip manager” joins the Pacific Raceways team, as John Ramsey will be in charge at all the drag racing events in 2012.
So lets summarize, new series sponsor Auto Max USA “check”, new food concessionaire “Big Food” “check”, new track manager John Ramsey “check”…

All in all things are looking good for 2012!

Now if they would only bring back “The FOX HUNT” our dreams will be realized….Oh, that’s the subject for another story…

Pacific Raceway Drag Racing Test & Tune #1

WOW…Unbelievable and FUN?

Ill bet anyone you ask who tested at Pacific Raceways last weekend would include the words WOW, Unbelievable and FUN in their descriptions of the activities during the first Drag Strip Test and Tune of the year. Car count approached a near record with 248 entries including all the brackets, a huge field of motorcycles and a few Junior Dragster competitors for good measure……WOW is right…..

Good “old Mother Nature” did her part too, a beautiful sunny and warm spring day….UNBELIEVABLE….for sure…

So I ask…with record car counts, and a beautiful day…and some fast runs….How can you say “I didn’t have FUN?” Don’t believe me? Click on the Photo Gallery link below….
