Swift Tools ET Series #7 & #8 at Pacific Raceways

Swift #8-WCSA-Doorslammers 6-26-16 (619)26 June 2016 Kent, WA – Back-to-Back E.T. races at Pacific Raceways are fun in many ways – bringing well in excess of 200 entries for the weekend.  Along with the Swift Tools E.T. series the West Coast Streetcar Association and Canada West Doorslammers brought their high powered machines for their series at Pacific Raceways.

Swift #8-WCSA-Doorslammers 6-26-16 (185)The great weather for racing had everyone ready to go at the scheduled time. Knowing how many runs no matter the class is shown in the “run order” that everyone has access to see. Knowing the times that you run also helps plan their doings when not running. You still have to eat and do any servicing to your race car. Unlike some tracks Pacific Raceways no matter the user on the dragstrip or road course they run until a curfew.  Packed lanes and running to that hour ended the #7 race unfinished.

Swift #8-WCSA-Doorslammers 6-26-16 (220)Finish up Sunday was the logical answer.  The run order already set for Sunday according to the time allotted has dragstrip manager Ed Garfield in a time juggling mode. Knowing that towards the end of Sunday races the “cool down” times brings moments of no racing he explained at the drivers meeting the new schedule.  It was executed to perfection by the dragstrip crew getting all races completed before time ran out with a big “great job” to the crew from Ed.

Double Header Weekend at Pacific Raceways

Super Saturday 6-11-16 (86)12 June 2016 Kent, WA – An action packed weekend of racing brought well in access of 200 entries spread among thirteen classes on Saturday and seven on Sunday.

Fighting off mother nature on Saturday as the track prepped and ready and cars called to the lanes, came the DOWNPOUR.  Just enough to soak everything and everyone scampering for cover. When the rain finished the Pacific drag crew brought the track back to condition as if the rain never happened.  Plenty of thanks from all for this well oiled crew earning the track the nickname “the house of hook”.

Super Saturday 6-11-16 (87)This crew takes pride in track prep that will pull your shoes off if you are not careful. Noticing this grip first hand Jonathan Hillstrand of the “Deadliest Catch” TV Show out to earn his license to race and giving the Jr. Dragster winner’s a big congrats and trophies. It was quite a thrill for them as their faces showed big smiles.

Over 900 images are available for the double header in two albums:

Swift Tools #1 & Jr Dragster #2 at Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET #1 - Jr Dragsters #2 4-16-16 61616 Apr 2016 Kent, WA – The quest has begun for the 2016 ET season championship.  Just shy of 200 entries gathered on Pacific’s grounds, all with their own dreams of becoming a track champion.

There were a bunch of new faces along with those racers that make up the core of the ET series looking to see their picture on the “wall of champions”.  With all things created equal these races are determined by fractions of a second that in pictures looks like a “dead heat” or a fraction of an inch.

Predicting what you will run in the “hundredth” of a second and then doing it is a feat on its own, doing it run after run will make you a champion.

The first step to the end game and card their first wins of the season are:

Jr Thunder: Ian Theofelis

Toy For Tots – NW Toy Drive at Pacific Raceways

Toys for Tots 12-6-15 17906 Dec 2015 Kent, WA – Each December the Pacific Raceways property plays host to some very generous people. The annual NW Toy Drive benefiting Toys for Tots. Sponsored by Lexus of Bellevue and the O’Brian Auto Group thousands of folks brought their un-wrapped gifts or cash donation for the Marine Corps Reserve program.
Toys for Tots 12-6-15 010Combine this with holiday music covering the many cars out for the car show gathering. Out on the 2.25 mile track a “lead/follow” was done, overseen by ProFormance Racing School giving those who take part an idea of what it feels like to drive a road course.
Toys for Tots 12-6-15 170Of course Santa and his helpers were on hand accepting gifts and posing for pictures, also on hand passing out candy canes was Ed Troyer from the Pierce County Toys for Tots program.
Toys for Tots 12-6-15 400Every year that I have covered this event it has gotten bigger and bigger thus proving the generosity of the NW to those in need. Great job by all those involved as it takes many to help bring it together each year. Till next year Happy Holidays to all.

“Radio Dave”

Forespring-520“Radio Dave” as all that knew him will remember him by. If it had to do with communications Dave was there: SCCA, Pacific Raceways the two that I was in his service. Supplying the radios and other services to the SCCA events at Pacific Dave seemed to be everywhere and on the radio you heard his call sign “Radio” when things needed his attention.

He was an active member of SCCA for more than 30 years. He had the pulse on the communications during the events no matter where he was at, the radios were on and on many channels.  He was also an active Ham Radio operator – Dave’s reach was worldwide.  In the Ham Radio community he has joined other Ham Radio members as what they call a “silent key”, and they have their own special remembrances and memories of him.

For what he did for me and many, many others he will be missed and very difficult to replace. Godspeed “Radio Dave”.

2015 ET Finals At Firebird Raceway

E.T. Finals 9-5-15b 05903-06 September 2015 Boise, ID – Firebird Raceway is just outside Boise Idaho, and was the setting for this year’s E.T. Finals.  It’s a ten to sixteen hour trip for most of the Pacific Pirates.  Wednesday saw many already there with Thursday and Friday bringing in those that had to get away from work.

E.T. Finals 9-6-15 308Wednesday and Thursday, the weather could not have been better at Firebird Raceway. It was a little cooler than normal but a welcome break from the heat that has been around all summer long in the whole northwest.  Test and tune Wednesday and Thursday was in the past as we rolled into Friday’s Gambler Race the weather was a changing.

The sky thickened and all eyes were on it. Weather checking on all the smart phones were saying the same thing, Get Ready. And come it did as the wind picked up and moved anything that was not tied down and those that were scrambled to keep it from going to Kansas. The wind put a halt to racing as it coated the track surface with sand leaving it looking somewhat like sandpaper.

With just a few rounds left to finish the powers that be could have cleaned the track to continue but the threat of rain when getting that completed put an end to the idea there.  It was great decision on their part as the rain came.

Saturday morning started dry then Mother Nature again threw a wrench into the works soaking everything. The plus side to this was the long and continuous lineup for Firebird’s yummy breakfast, with biscuits and gravy. They are good as I joined the others going through the line.

E.T. Finals 9-3-15 223Once the Race of Champions got started the day went off without a hitch completed with the crowning of the class champs that will represent Division 6 in Pomona. Mighty Joe Lind will take his bike and represent Pacific Raceways as not only the track champ but as the Division 6 champ, Great job Joe!

E.T. Finals 9-5-15 334Sunday’s race weather could not have been better though quite chilly early. Racing today for all attending was for class champions in each of the E.T. classes with points for each win to determine the overall track champs, and once again the group from Woodburn in a tie breaker won, laying claims for 2015.

With the finals going north of the border next year plans to do so start now and will require ID to cross, hope to see you there.

I would like to thank David Atkins of Atkins Rotary for introducing me to Lauretta. Quite a skilled photographer with a sharp eye on nature. Having never photographed drag racing before I offered up a camera for her to shoot what she sees and have fun. Here to spend some quality time with her father most of her shots followed him as is natural. By her own admission “I know nothing but would very much like to learn”. Looking at her shots she is right though there are shots that show her natural ability and just a few pointers will bring those skills that she has already has to the top.

Maybe our paths will cross again to see what she has learned and pass those little pointers along. Thanks Lauretta for your additional pics and a glimpse into your look at a first timer to the drags, could not have been a better choice to get away from everything and see what your father enjoys.

The images are organized by day – in four albums – click here for the Event Folder with links for all four days of the 2015 ET Finals! Good Luck in Pomona!

Swift Tools ET Series Race #10 At Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET #10 and Jr. #11 and HS #5 8-15-15 88415 Aug 2015 Kent, WA – The end of the season is upon us and the scramble to prepare for the E.T. Finals coming up at Firebird Raceway in Boise. It is always a holiday weekend no matter where it is held and the racers have penciled on their schedule.

At the start of the season all the racers have the same plan, make the E.T. Finals. For those that do it is an exciting time with a carrot at the end to go and be the class representative for the Division 6 field at the finals in Pomona California.

For all those going the best of luck and a big congrats to the Swift Tool E.T. Series King of the Track Greg Steen.

Swift Tools ET Series Event #8 at Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET #8 7-12-15 04212 July 2015 Kent, WA – Day two of the back-to-back Swift Tool ET Series.  The overcast skies had a muggy feeling for a while, then the clouds parted for some sunshine to bask in. For the racers it was a chance to keep cool in the cars and hope the tune up was on for their run.

Dialing in the hundredths is knowing your car and yourself as this racing is about being constant in what you are doing.   There were 150 or so racers going for the four different class wins and the points that go with it.   All looking for a spot in the ET Finals in Boise over Labor Day weekend.

Images of the day are now online and available , broken into two sets of images and albums – click on the Series A link for the 1st album, and the Series B link for the 2nd album:
