Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series At Pacific Raceway – Day 1 Test N Tune

LODRS Pacific Raceways TnT 8-20-15 14220 Aug 2015 Kent, WA – The beginning of the divisional weekend got underway with a test and tune for those who have made changes and needed to test or those that needed data for the first time here at Pacific Raceways.

No matter the reason, the goal is the same, get it right, and the test and tune time will get the information that the teams may be looking for.  Different tracks and weather changing all require adding more detailed information for the log books.

Come out and watch some of the top sportsman racers in the northwest this weekend at Pacific Raceways.

Swift Tools ET Series Race #10 At Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET #10 and Jr. #11 and HS #5 8-15-15 88415 Aug 2015 Kent, WA – The end of the season is upon us and the scramble to prepare for the E.T. Finals coming up at Firebird Raceway in Boise. It is always a holiday weekend no matter where it is held and the racers have penciled on their schedule.

At the start of the season all the racers have the same plan, make the E.T. Finals. For those that do it is an exciting time with a carrot at the end to go and be the class representative for the Division 6 field at the finals in Pomona California.

For all those going the best of luck and a big congrats to the Swift Tool E.T. Series King of the Track Greg Steen.

Steven Ham – AA/FC Driver

Good Guys 7-24-15 541In the sport of drag racing there are drivers from various countries and continents around the world. Over the past three weeks I had the privilege of being around one of these International drag racers.

Steven Ham hails from Brisbane in the Queensland area of Australia. Taking a break from his and his father’s heavy equipment repair business, they decided to come racing in the northwest. First stop was at Woodburn Dragstrip in Oregon for the first step in the car purchased last year from John Evanchuk up in Canada.

NWN 8-7-15 007

This connection to the Evanchuk’s was a huge eye opener to a local friend and shows how the drag racing community is a worldwide thing. Climbing into a new machine was quite different, but quite the same as the one he drives at his local dragstrip Willowbank Australia. The success racing around his country puts him right up there with the alcohol driver’s here in the U.S.

Swift Tool ET Series #9 7-25-15 403

With a plan to test as much as possible before the Northwest Nationals in a few weeks there is a lot to do in the fine tuning that fits the driver to the machine let alone the tuning to make it run in a competitive manner. With the initial testing in the log books they headed north to Pacific Raceways for more testing and fine tuning. The wide open area of around the track, and the nearby oxygen given by the trees surrounding the racetrack was perfect for tuning.

With Friday and Saturday events scheduled at the track it became the perfect time to set up for the National’s. Track prep by the Pacific drag crew can prep a track close to what is done by the National’s drag crew so you can get a pretty close base line to work off of. Having no data to work from I say they were right in the ballpark for qualifying in the alcohol field.
With all the testing possible and still a week away from the National’s it was break time. As an avid fisherman the sight of all the rivers, lakes and open water in the Pacific Northwest had his attention.

They mostly do reef fishing at home, so the thought of giving it a go was on the plate. Heading north towards Canada the sights of the mountains and the scenery had their cameras and smart phones catching it all. In Canada to visit friends and take in the sights around there became the perfect time off and vacation needed to gear up for what was ahead of them, and all along the way they were taking in the chance to eat food not found at home. You here it a lot about the “Steak on the Barbie” his favorite, but the chance to eat Italian and Mexican food quite the experience and something that they will seek out at home.

NWN 8-7-15 140

Back in Seattle and all that is necessary for a National event got the crew back in racing mood and the checklists of to do items. This group has Dan Case on the motor with Greg Layton in the gears and Deiter Herman in between on the clutch all leading to James Rowland the tuner. Three attempts at qualifying though brought out the bugs in that list of a thousand ways to lose a race and in the end an electrical issue ended their chance to make the field. The RD Williams/Noonan Race Engineering sponsored car gave it a “go” and fell just short. Not discouraged buy this the team will head back home to re-group and attempt to make the Las Vegas and Pomona later this year and give it another go.

It was a pleasure meeting Steven and his crew and look forward to the next chance to see him, good luck to the future and happy racing to you, Thank You.

It All Begins On The Starting Line

Starter-Mix-118-t520As the 2015 NHRA Northwest Nationals is about to kickoff at Pacific Raceways it brings me to the people at the head of the line, the last person to oversee everything before a run from a safety standpoint first of all, and the hand that trips the switch that will activate the tree to send you down the track.

One starter is now retired, the others are in three different levels of racing, NHRA Chief Starter, NHRA Division Starter and Pacific Raceways Local Track Starter. All have in common Pacific Raceways/SIR as their starting point.

Ray Rice is a legend here in the Northwest Division. He got his start by pure chance, as the starter at the time had a beef with management and walked away. Then tech inspector at the track Frank Nelson Sr. approached Ray and asked, would you like to be starter for the day? Ray stated that he had never done it but he had been around the starting line and starter enough that he had an idea of what was needed and he would give it a go. Thus started his run at a position that earned him a spot in the Northwest Division Hall of Fame.

To call him a legend could be an understatement as Ray led the way with innovations that to this day proved he was on the right track. Safety is the first order of the day. Treat all the racers as you would like to be treated yourself, weekend bracket racer or touring pro it made no difference. You have to understand that was in the late 60’s, no electronics to help with dial-ins, they were done on the spot by hand. Track prep was really in it’s infancy as most tracks did not have any concrete, just asphalt. As the years went on the equipment, products and especially the track owners stepped up to provide a much safer surface for the racers.

It was as a NHRA Division starter going to all the different tracks with their different surfaces that the need for all to be prepped to as close to the same just to make it fair to the competitors as they have a good idea what their performance should be. Nothing drives a racer nuttier than up and down performance. With now more than two decades behind him Ray was in the search for a re-placement.

Having seen Mark Lyle work at Pacific, Ray told his wife “I think I found our guy”. Mark Lyle working as the starter at Pacific Raceways was approached by then Div-6 director Mike Rice and asked if he would be entrusted in working under his father’s tutelage as the next division starter that was in 2002. In 2005 Ray retired and Mark was on his way. “Ray’s teaching set the foundation and approach that I take for every race” Mark says. With a background that is somewhat diverse Mark rolled that into a tight divisional crew. Choose people who understand their rolls and have a common goal and things will work out. One of these crew members is Mike Gittings who by chance applied for the starter’s job at Pacific the same time as Mark did and now getting the same tutelage that Mark got from Ray being passed on to him. Knowing Ray and having been around him while he was working the switch Mike has great respect and admiration for what he taught Mark and what was now being taught to him.

With Mike now working the divisional events with Mark this created an opening for a starter at Pacific, enter Rick Straley. Having been around the racetrack in a different capacity Rick was drawn to the position. A little of trial by fire and a lot of listening and watching Mike or Mark when they were on the switch. “I feel it a great honor to be taught by such knowledgeable starters” says Rick. “I have a lot to learn in the years ahead but with these men in front of me you can’t go wrong” says Rick. With Mark now chosen to work the “big show” as “NHRA Chief Starter” it opened up the opportunity for Mike to step up to the NHRA Northwest Division Six starter position. “With many qualified people applying for the position I knew it was a shot I had to take” says Mike. The one thing that all these men all have in common is the passion for the position. They all care about the track and the safety of the racer’s.

Having listened to all these men on the radio (except Ray) you gain an understanding of what they do besides stand at the front of the line and flip a switch. And after listening to them it becomes more apparent what a great starter Ray was doing this at first for a long while without the help of radio communications during the hay-day events at Pacific Raceways/SIR. Ask any of these current starters how they would run a race without a radio and they just shake their head. Again it’s a great testament to what Ray accomplished during his tenure. Retirement from a job is where Ray is at but you will see him at events in Arizona with his son and here at Pacific lending a hand or should I say a very experienced eye to what is going down the track.

Enjoy your retirement Ray, you earned it.

P.S. Over the years there have been many people who have served as starter for Pacific Raceways with great success though none are as connected as these four. The nearest person I could come up with the closest ties to these men is Mike Rice, current Division 7 director, though you see the connection right away.

The Players:

Ray Rice-Retired Division 6 starter
Mark Lyle-Chief Starter NHRA
Mike Gittings-Division 6 starter

IRDC Car Tender Challenge X at Pacific Raceways

IRDC Car Tender Challenge 8-1-15 37931 Jul – 02 August 2015 Kent, WA – As the list of entries neared 170 the racers for this weekend’s Car Tender Challenge X the IRDC event was on. Five classes of cars and a lot of fun for all, and, yes, there is the stress of getting things right for the race but the mood is all fun. To see the fun all you need to do is watch the crew that is gridding these race cars.

Greg and his crew are up and down the grid sometimes running to meet the next car to assign them to their correct grid position, and from up above on the lift it is quite a sight to watch. Seeing this from above and the race cars themselves is a sight that I do not get too often and this vantage point is something that whenever permission is granted I will give you that view.

Car Tender Challange X 8-2-15 394

The racing itself is as always hot and heavy. In groups 1 and 2 the largest of entries for the weekend created some great side by side and front to back racing. Sometimes it would be sweet to see thru those dark visors to see the grins on the driver’s faces, priceless I would guess.

4-Stroke Racing Series At Pacific Raceways

4-Stroke Race Series 8-2-15 08202 Aug 2015 Kent, WA – The first week into August is only day two and the temps are starting to rise from the high 80’s to in the 90’s.  Seattle is just not the place to think of this weather. Rain right? Everyone was hunting for shade and water to keep cool and hydrated.

The racing in the 206 light class was the one to watch as the action was hot and heavy as the karts rounded the track. A little over a minute is all it took for the winner to lap the track and bring home the trophy.

Craig Collins did this in the 206 light class while Ricky Arnold took it in 206 Heavy and Doug Huggler captured the World Formula top spot.

Advanced Lapping Day – July 30th, 2015

Advanced Lapping Day 7-30-15 00230 July 2015 Kent, WA – This day is set aside to give those that have been thru the ProFormance School or those that just want to get more seat time in their car a chance to make laps on the road course. Those that came out today fit that description pretty well. If this look at those that took advantage of this day has your car in mind give the ProFormance web site for an upcoming date.

Cantrell Motorsports Track Day At Pacific Raceways

Cantrell Motorsports 7-29-15 06529 July 2015 Kent, WA – The 2.25mi. track at Pacific Raceways hosts many forms of racing, from multi-speed peddle power to full blown open wheel race cars with many classes in between.  At any one of these events you never know what type of car may show up and sometimes you will be surprised at who may be driving the car.

Such is the case today for the Cantrell Motorsports day at Pacific Raceways.  Preparing to take to the track a British A/C Cobra and i’s right hand drive position of which grabs your attention right away.

Further checking revealed that the driver of that car is two time Indy champ Arie Luyendyk. What a treat to meet the legends of the past that in your youth were the heroes you watched on the television.

Not 100% sure but all indications point to testing a car for another race team that will run it and no better way to tell how well it will work then testing by someone who knows… Super cool.

For all those attending the Cantrell Motorsports day that watched or even got to meet Arie what a thrill to see him here at Pacific Raceways this day.

Swift Tools ET Series Event #9 At Pacific Raceways

Swift Tool ET Series #9 7-25-15 04825 July 2015 Kent, WA – This Saturday morning for the Swift Tool event started out with a couple of laps around Pacific Raceways legendary 2.25 mile track by the local Porsche club as they embark on a trip to visit Porsche clubs around the west coast. Would like to have learned more of the details but as most of the info is held person to person as to not draw a crowd to what they are doing until they are ready to let everyone know.  Good Luck and have a safe journey.

As the Porsche club drove off the property the drag racers came pouring in for the Swift Tool event. An overnight pouring of rain had soaked everything and the current conditions are not to favorable for quick drying and with the chance for more rain the dilemma of to run or not to run became a hard choice for drag strip manager Ed Garfield.

Swift Tool ET Series #9 7-25-15 025

Checking the radar like everyone else that has that smart phone capability the decision to run got the drag crew into action to dry the track. With the help of a bunch of street tired cars and trucks lapping the shutdown portion of the track the dampness that prevents racing was eliminated and racing got underway though a few Mother Nature induced hours later then the scheduled time.

This great track work by the drag staff on the track surface had Australian native Steven Ham primed to do some more testing with his alcohol funny car prior to the national event coming to Pacific Raceways in a few weeks. By the looks of the passes made he is right in the mix and a good shot at going all the way.

A break in the Swift Tool events till after the Nationals, see you then.

2015 Goodguys NW Nationals Drags

Good Guys 7-24-15 19224 July 2015 Kent, WA – Bringing back and keeping the tradition of the oldies alive the 25th Annual Good Guys Northwest Nationals event mixes a massive car show at the Puyallup Fairgrounds and drag racing at Pacific Raceways.

With a gap in the engine starting time and the start of drag racing Jim Ronan had the chance to get some more seat time in his wheel stander. Getting a machine like this to do what you want it to do is a fine balance, most of which comes from the seat of your pants and that balance point of the truck in which you can see in Breann’s pictures. Little by little Jim is getting it down and down the track working towards the ticket to do it for real, “Keep It Up”.

Good Guys 7-24-15 068b

After a few delay’s for brief sprinkles the show went on and the stands filled with plenty of oldies watcher’s reliving the days when this was the action on the drag strip.

This once a year event will bring so many different types of old race and show cars that for the most part sit protected and covered to protect their show condition. Great time watching all this action and look forward to next year’s event, till then keep this history alive.
